Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impacts of climate change in Chile and how this may affect Security and Defense, considering the current situation of the Panama Canal, which has seen its communications hampered by the lack of fresh water (2023-2024 drought). As a result, many vessels have had to divert south, specifically to Chile, to connect their cargo with Pacific ports. Therefore, the research question is: 1) What are the implications of climate change, especially the water shortage in other regions of the Americas, for Security and Defense in Chile, particularly regarding the Strait of Magellan? The hypothesis is that this scenario will generate greater interest from major powers in becoming involved in areas of Chilean sovereignty in the coming decades.
